NOTES

1. I am most grateful for the comments of Campbell Macknight, Christian Pelras and Abdurrahim on earlier versions of this paper.

2. In reality this title was not used until after the acceptance of Islam fifteen years later, but it is convenient to stick to it in view of the succession of titles he bore: Palakkaya, I Mallingkaang, I Daeng Mannyonri, Karaeng ri Kanjilo. Karaeng ri Segeri, as well as the later Islamic title Sultan Awal-ul-Islam (the first Muslim), and the posthumous one of Tumenanga ri Agamana.

3. Sedjarah Goa (71), and the Gowa Diary (Ligtvoet 1880, 105) both have To Bala appointed Kadi, and the former adds that Karaeng ri Sumanna’ was appointed regent. The description of subsequent events by the Sedjarah Goa makes it seem likelier that by Kadi was meant the person responsible to Gowa for Bone affairs. We are inclined therefore to follow Noorduyn (1955, 117), and Speelman (1670, I: 54), in regarding To Bala as effectively regent.
